In 'Carnal Knowledge' (1971), Jonathan (Jack Nicholson) and Sandy (Art Garfunkel) find their sexual attitudes and aptitudes changing as they move through life from college to middle age. When they share a room as students, Jonathan gives Sandy tips on women, only to conduct an affair with Sandy's girlfriend Susan (Candice Bergen) behind his back. Later, after Sandy and Susan are married, Jonathan conducts a long affair with Bobbie (Ann-Margret), and faces a difficult decision after she attempts suicide. 'The Graduate' (1967), a modern classic with a famous score by Simon and Garfunkel, was nominated for six Oscars, with Mike Nichols winning the award for Best Director. After graduating from college Ben Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) returns to his wealthy parents' South Californian home unsure of what he wants to do next. Feeling pressurized to get on with his life, the young Braddock escapes into an aimless affair with Mrs Robinson (Anne Bancroft), an older, married woman and friend of the family. The pair meet regularly, with neither expecting anything serious from the relationship, but this seemingly simple situation becomes complicated when Ben meets and begins dating Elaine (Katharine Ross) - Mrs Robinson's daughter. John Hurt stars in 'The Elephant Man' (1980) as John Merrick, a human freak who has been brutalised in childhood for his appalling deformities. When he is discovered by London doctor Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins), he is treated with kindness and intelligence for the first time in his life. But unfortunately, awakening his true character gives rise to a new set of problems, for Merrick can never lead a 'normal' life. David Lynch's atmospheric, fact-based film was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Director and Best Actor.
