As PSVR finally hits it makes a certain kind of odd sense that Battlezone is one of the launch titles. The original was a 1980 coin-op arcade, so at first glance it doesn't scream 'make me into a cutting edge virtual reality title', but if the older gamers among us think back really hard they'll remember that to play the game you had to peer into a periscope-like device to see the game, making it effectively the first ever VR title. In Battlezone you control a tank tasked with taking out enemy UFOs. If there was ever a more simple premise for a first-person shooter, we've yet to come across it. The premise that you're sitting in a tank makes a certain amount of sense for VR too, though, as the slow movement of the tank naturally limits the discombobulation some players feel when trying out VR for the first time. You control your tank using the DualShock 4 controller with a fairly standard shoot-'em-up set-up. There's a range of tanks to choose from - you have one low-impact, infinite use weapon regardless of which you choose, then an array of more high calibre weapons that you can upgrade and customise your loadout with. The game's campaign mode is randomly generated, with players being given a range of strategic objectives on an infinite variety of maps, and they can be played either solo or with up to three friends. Battlezone sports a Tron-like art style - a smart choice that dodges potential graphical hitches with what's essentially a platform while still being easy on the eye.
